June Challenge 2023

Description

June is DeafBlind Awareness Month, and this year we are setting up a virtual distance challenge.

June's Virtual Challenge covers over 4,000 miles across the northern United States. There are approximately 16 stops on the way with information about the area. Stops include historical, natural, and cultural points of interest.

But wait! Does this mean you have to walk 4,000 miles?! No, this is a collaborative Challenge. If you do some miles everyday, then all you have to do is add your distance to our online platform, and it'll keep track of everyone's distances and add them up.

The goal is everyone can move at their own pace and together we will cross The United States virtually to raise awareness about DeafBlind people.

Frequently Asked Questions

The DeafBlind Support and Access Network (DBSAN) was founded with one simple goal – as a way to connect the DeafBlind community across the US and the globe. Since then, it has expanded the programs to educate the mainstream community to DeafBlind people and our culture. At DBSAN, we’re dedicated to making a difference. Since 2020, we have provided support meetings, workshops, panels, contests, and a DeafBlind retreat.. Our goal is simple: is to provide the DeafBlind community with access, education, support, and networking.

Money raised goes towards paying for interpreters for meetings; costs for renting space to provide training; to cover costs for hosting conferences and retreats, as well as to offer scholarships; and covering a variety of eventsto allow people to have new experiences.

You can track your distance using a variety of apps. GPS based apps such as Strava and Nike+ Running are great for tracking distances using a variety of exercises. smart watch and Fitbits, as well as smart phones can track steps which can be converted to miles. You can also measure distances by using a GPS map app.

On your participant page, there is an option to add a distance. Select your activity, add the distance in miles, add an optional photo or comment, and click to submit. The distance will now show up on your page, and will also be added to total distance on the main Challenge page.

If using a fitbit, smart watch, pedometer, or step tracking app: 2,000 steps roughly equals a mile.

If tracking in kilometers: 1km equals .62 miles. So multiply your total kilometers by .62 to convert it to miles.

That is completely up to you! Most people generally walk at least three to five miles a day. You can do more or less. Just make sure to keep track of how far you go and add it to your page!

We would love to see everyone complete the challenge, every mile you log gets us closer to our goal. Please consider asking friends and family to join in so we can complete this Challenge!

Absolutely not! We trust you! But it is a great idea to post updates on your progress to your facebook page to help encourage others to donate and keep going.

We do have a number of ways that we can detect cheaters, however we do realize that no matter what we do or how we structure it, people are always going to be able to cheat if that’s what they want to do. E.g. Put their Fitbit on their dog!

There are no prizes for first place.

If someone wants to cheat then they are only cheating themselves.
